A few weeks ago I decided to jump on the hippie train and find out what all the buzz was about regarding “Earthing” and grounding mats, and seeing that I’m up to my eyeballs in turtlenecks, snow, fluffy socks and iced windows with no sign of walking barefoot in lush green grass anytime soon (well unless I want frost bite) I gave it a shot.
Now, if you are not familiar with Earthing/grounding let me share a little snip it with you:
Years of extensive research has shown that connecting to the Earth’s natural energy, by walking barefoot on grass, sand, dirt or rock can diminish chronic pain, fatigue and other ailments that plague so many people today. This connection is referred to as Earthing or Grounding.
To put it briefly, when your bare feet or skin comes in contact with the earth, free electrons are taken up into the body. These electrons could be referred to as nature’s biggest antioxidants and help neutralize damaging excess free radicals that can lead to inflammation and disease in the body. The Earth is a conductor or free electrons and so are all living things on the planet, including us. According to research, earthing may be beneficial with the following:
- Reducing inflammation
- Reducing chronic pain
- Improving Sleep
- Increasing Energy
- Lowering stress and promoting calmness by reducing stress hormones.
- Normalizing blood pressure and blood flow
- Relieving muscle tension and headache
- Improving menstrual and female hormone symptoms
- Speeds healing- used in some places to prevent bed sores
- Reducing jet lag
- Protecting the body from effects of EMFs
- Shortening recovery time from injury or athletic activity
- Reducing snoring
So, the grounding mat allows you to do earthing while you’re inside a building. It just plugs in to the grounding wire port of a normal 3-prong outlet. The earth’s natural electrons flow right up through the ground wire and onto the mat.
Here’s my experience with earthing
I received a black mat that resembled a thin place mat, along with a blue cloth wristband that had some do hicky clasp, oh and lets not forget the longest cord on the planet. Let me just say that the cord caused me unnecessary anxiety…..it took forever to unravel this sucker every time that I used it. Seriously, I needed wine NOT a fucking mat or a wristband.
The first couple of days I was quite hopeful due to the many positive reviews, but personally I didn’t know what to expect. I thought I’d have the same feeling that I get on a nice warm day while walking barefoot on some soft green grass or resemble the lady on the box who is sitting in a grassy field looking on top of the world. *insert eye roll here* I didn’t see any thing different.
I decided to bring it to work and test it out, I hooked it up and dived right into my day. At times I even hooked some of my co-workers to it, they kept asking me what to expect. Honestly, I had no words. I guess I was trying to gauge their result.
Not giving up hope I tried the mat in my bed. I heard that sleeping with it at the edge of your bed would help with sleep issues. HOW CAN THIS EVEN BE POSSIBLE?? the mat is cold and it’s plastic but I gave it a shot. I laid it down, climbed into bed and pulled the covers over me. COLD. I hate cold feet. I tried to not even think about it but then I thought about what if I feel asleep and it shorted out then my bed would catch on fire OR what if one of my animals got themselves tangled up into this long flipping cord and all hell breaks loose in the middle of the night………………all this in the span of 30 minutes. Screw this, I unplugged and grabbed my essential oils.
I still didn’t give up though I had hopes of zenful moments but I think that my expectations were too high, kinda like my expectations in the opposite sex.
2 weeks later ….
My final attempt was yesterday. I strapped the bracelet to my wrist, connected myself to the outlet, took a deep breath all the while hoping for the best . NOTHING….I even added some mantra’s to my routine, still nothing.
I thought, maybe I’m just relaxed so I decided to add a bit of stress to my day by spending hours on the phone with insurance companies. Nothing. It didn’t do diddly squat in reducing my stress level or blood pressure due to the idiots I encountered on the phone.
“Fuck this shit!” I shouted while pulling the damn contraption off my wrist and shoving the tangled cord and wrist band back in my bag. If it wasn’t 16 degrees outside I probably would have thrown it outside but then I’d run and pick it up because I just detest litter and those who can’t find it within themselves to walk the desired steps to the garbage can.
So needless to say my experience with the grounding mat was a bust. I will just stick to what I know works……..a stress free environment, Reiki and wine.
