Zenful evening at Peaceful Mind Therapeutic.

I was beyond excited to attend the Singing Bowl meditation and Reiki event at Peaceful Mind Therapeutic in Omaha Nebraska this past Friday. I had been anticipating this for weeks. I have always been interested in actually witnessing someone perform the Tibetan singing bowls and honestly I had imagined a Tibetan monk dressed in his robe ready to get his groove on, bowl style. Instead, a very charismatic man by the name of Patrick walked through the door and was greeted by the owners, Dianne and Cassie. He was the one who was going to help us all get our zen on through the majestic sound of the singing bowls. img_7225

The benefit of singing bowls are :

  • Reduce stress and anxiety significantly

  • Lower anger and blood pressure

  • Improve circulation and increases blood flow

  • Deep relaxation and pain relief

  • Chakra balancing

  • Increase mental and emotional clarity

  • Promote stillness, happiness and well being. Stimulate the immune system.

As the room filled up with many familiar faces I felt the positive energy fill the room. We all laid out of our yoga mats in a circle while the bowls were in the middle…..this way we could all feel the effects of the vibration coming off the bowls and then we were set to embark on an hour long session of relaxation.

Good bye stressful week, Hello weekend!

Dianne took us through a very beautiful chakra meditation and with each chakra a different bowl was played.

The Sanskrit word Chakra literally translates to wheel or disk. In yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, this term refers to wheels of energy throughout the body. There are seven main chakras, which align the spine, starting from the base of the spine through to the crown of the head. To visualize a chakra in the body, imagine a swirling wheel of energy where matter and consciousness meet. This invisible energy, called Prana, is vital life force, which keeps us vibrant, healthy, and alive.  – Michelle Fondin @ Chopra.com

img_7221It wasn’t long before the two people beside me were whisked away into a deep meditation because the one on the left was from time to time deep breathing/ snoring and the one on the right was snoring which didn’t allow me to get as wrapped up into the moment as I usually do. It’s no one’s fault. I was more envious of them that they were able to just shut their brain off so quickly. So instead of getting zen I was thinking about why I couldn’t fall asleep like them, why I had the burrito for lunch now my stomach was bubbly and thinking of that one episode in Sex in the City where Charlotte visited an acupuncturist and he told her to block out the noise. So I tried. I tried to block out the noise but the person (to the right of me) phone kept vibrating.

“Come on Jolene, focus….focus on the sounds of the bowls. Focus on Dianne’s voice. Just focus!” but all I wanted to do was grab the lady’s cellphone and turn it on silent, I nudged the person on my left (which was my daughter) to shush her a bit…..didn’t help, she was back in LaLa land within seconds.  I need to bring ear plugs next time, but if I did that how would I hear the meditation.  Seriously, I needed a good bolt of energy through my crown chakra to just shut my brain the fuck up!

Once the meditation part was over we all were treated to a mini Reiki session. Which is my FAVORITE. It always amazes me to feel the heat and energy radiate from the hands of the practitioners.

Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.  – Reiki.org

After the session was over we were all asked to introduce ourselves and when it was my turn I sat up straight, smiled and said “Hi, I’m Jolene ….. I’m a Reiki Addict” which is the truth. My life/health has changed so much since I started going to Peaceful Mind Therapeutic. Many think that we just need to take care of our outer shell, our body….making sure our hair is done right, are make up is beautiful, that we are at the right weight or wearing the right thing… never giving a second thought to our core center  as well as our psychological, emotional, and spiritual states of being. It’s important to get that aligned as well.

I think the part that I enjoyed the most was getting to feel the vibration of the singing bowl while it was laid on my hand. The vibrations penetrated my body and consumed me. It left me in a state of zenfulness. So for that brief minute I was able to shut out the noise and focus on the sound and vibration that was flowing through me.

Below is a video that I took of my daughter experiencing the vibration of the singing bowl.
